Pride.

Pride is dangerous.

It was pride that caused the World War.
It is pride that causes the rising number of homicides.
It was pride that caused the Beatles to disband.
And It was pride that caused John Lennon's death.

The price people pay when pride is lost?
-life.

Why are people cautious of the company they keep?
Why do people keep a distance from people with menial jobs [rag and bone. janitor.] ?
Why do people find humour in these peoples' job, and thus constantly poke fun?

They call it pride.

PRIDE
a high or inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc.

and this is how i see pride.

PRIDE
a catalyst to all inhumane behaviour.

At this very moment, pride has struck again somewhere;
it has sworn to pester us for eternity.

hmm.
good writing of personal feeling , but i have to contest these individual views.
saying that "pride is a catalyst to all inhumane behaviour" is to assert that anyone who holds themselves in any regard is a "bad person" and that, beyond any doubt, atrocious acts will ensue because of that self-regard.
it's a gross generalization.

Because they see these people as failures, as not being on the same level as them. Would you want to be a rubbish collector? No? Why? Might it be that you think you are better than that?

He calls it a catalyst. And while it isn't the root of the problem, Pride certainly aids it.
Is Pride really the problem, or is the society that causes people to have a need for it that is?

Rhetorical question, but the answer , at least mine, is a resounding "the latter".
Which is why I find picking on the "what", if you will, is not a worthy endeavour- as it is virtually always the who that is the cause of the problem.
Mainly, the post, as interpreted by me, reads that pride is a total bane to society. Which is an opinion that I cannot help but find fault with.

But hey, just playing devil's advocate. Great discussion. Finally.

Yeah, there are a few statements which I disagree with as well [2nd-5th line]. You are right in saying the post suggests Pride is a total bane. He does seem to take a rather extreme view towards the concept. Maybe it's because the term he is using -pride- is too general. he could be using Pride as a definition of egotism, and [hopefully] not self-esteem.

Also, you mean the rest of the guys reading this don't have anything interesting to say? The tagbox is pretty full of people.
